ハクセキレイのハクは、街中で暮らしています。
ハクは今日も通りを歩いています。
通りに面したお店の一つに鏡があり、ハクがそこを通る度に、自分の姿が鏡に映ります。
ですが、ハクはそれが自分だとは気付いていないようです。
ハクは鏡に映るハクセキレイが、勝手に自分のテリトリーに入り込んでいると勘違いしているようです。
そのため、ハクはその鏡の前を通る度に、鏡の中のハクセキレイに威嚇しています。
しかし、いつまで経っても鏡の中のハクセキレイはどこかへ行ってくれません。
ハクがどうしたものかと思っていると、ある日、鏡の中のハクセキレイが、
「こっちへおいでよ」
と、話しかけてきました。
ハクは少し驚きながらも、くちばしを鏡に近づけてみました。
すると、くちばしがスルリと鏡の中に入り、そのまま身体ごと入っていきました。
ハクは鏡の中の光景に驚きました。
なんと、彼が今まで見た光景と逆さまになっていました。
ハクに話しかけてきたハクセキレイは、今度は今までハクが居た方の鏡の中にいました。
どうやら二羽(？)は入れ替わったようです。
ハクは鏡の中の世界を探検することにしました。
好奇心旺盛なハクはここでもちょこちょこと歩き回りました。
目に映るもの全てが逆さまですが、どれも見たことのあるものばかりです。
けれども、街の雰囲気や空気感が全く違うように感じました。
今までよりも軽やかな感じがしました。
ニンゲンの表情も違っていました。
みな、にこやかで楽しそうでした。
ハクには街全体が生き生きとしているように見えました。
今まで居た街中では、ハクにとってはニンゲンや街の様子などには特に関心がありませんでした。
けれども、鏡の中の世界では、空気感が軽やかで、今までとは比べものにならないくらい心地よい空間だとハクは感じていました。
すると、ハクが今まで居た鏡の向こう側にいるハクセキレイが言いました。
「今居る場所がキミの本当の世界さ」
ハクは
「本当の世界って、どういうこと!?」
「今までいた世界は本当ではなかったのか!?あれだけリアルに見え、感じていたのに」
ハクは驚きを隠せませんでした。
「キミはそのうちにその真実が分かるよ」
と、鏡の向こう側のハクセキレイが言いました。
「真実か…」
ハクは鏡の向こうのハクセキレイの言葉を気にかけながらも、再び歩き出しました。
数ヵ月が経ち、ハクは鏡の中の世界での生活にすっかり慣れていました。
慣れたというより、違和感がないと言ったほうが正解かもしれません。
ハクがこちらの世界に来て以来、あの鏡はなくなっていて、ハクは鏡の向こうのハクセキレイに会うこともありませんでした。
ふと、ハクはあの日、鏡の向こうのハクセキレイが言っていた真実のことを思い出しました。
「もしかしたら、ボクが今、感じているこの違和感が全くない生活こそが、彼の言う真実だったのかも知れないな」
そして、彼は鏡のこちら側の世界に来る前の自分が感じていたことを思い出していました。
「そういえば、あの頃は心の奥で何かが違うような、物足りないような感覚があったけど、今はそれが全くなくなった」
「今の生活がしっくりきすぎていて、もう前の生活には戻れないな」
と、思いました。
「前は毎日、食べ物を探すこととテリトリーを守ることで精一杯だったけど、今は全てが心地よく感じている」
「他にも何か楽しいことが見つけられそうな気がしてきた」
と、ハクは明るく鳴きました。

Haku, a white wagtail, lives in the city.
Haku is walking down the street today as well.
One of the shops facing the street has a mirror, and every time Haku passes by, he sees his reflection in the mirror.
However, Haku doesn't seem to realise that it's him.
Haku seems to mistakenly believe that the white wagtail reflected in the mirror has entered his territory without permission.
Therefore, every time Haku passes in front of the mirror, he threatens the white wagtail in the mirror.
However, no matter how much time passes, the white wagtail in the mirror just won't go away.
Haku was wondering what to do, when one day the white wagtail in the mirror spoke to him, saying, "Come over here."
Haku was a little surprised, but he brought his beak closer to the mirror.
Then, his beak slid right into the mirror, and then his whole body went inside.
Haku was surprised by what he saw in the mirror.
It was the opposite of what he had seen before.
The white wagtail that had been talking to Haku was now in the mirror where Haku had been before.
It seems the two birds(?) have switched places.
Haku decided to explore the world inside the mirror.
Being very curious, Haku wandered around here and there as well.
Everything he saw was upside down, yet it was all familiar.
But he felt the atmosphere and vibe of the city was completely different.
He felt lighter than ever before.
He noticed that the expressions on the people's faces were different too.
Everyone was smiling and seemed to be having fun.
To Haku, the whole town seemed full of life.
In the cities he had been in up until then, Haku hadn't been particularly interested in the people or the state of the city.
However, in the world inside the mirror, the air felt light and Haku felt that it was a much more comfortable space than he had experienced before.
Then, White Wagtail, who was on the other side of the mirror Haku had been in, said,
"The place you are in now is your real world."
Haku asked,
"What do you mean, real world?"
"So the world I've been in until now wasn't real? It looked and felt so real."
Haku couldn't hide his surprise.
"You'll find out the truth one day,"
said the white wagtail on the other side of the mirror.
"Is it true...?"
Haku, mindful of the white wagtail's words on the other side of the mirror, started walking again.
A few months passed, and Haku had become completely accustomed to life in the mirror world.
Rather than saying he was used to it, it would be more accurate to say that it no longer felt strange.
Since Haku came to this world, the mirror has disappeared, and Haku has never met the White Wagtail on the other side of the mirror.
Suddenly, Haku remembered the truth that the white wagtail had said that day.
"Maybe the life I'm currently experiencing, completely free of discomfort, is the truth he spoke of."
And he remembered how he felt before he came to this side of the mirror.
"Come to think of it, back then I used to feel like something was different, like something was missing deep inside, but now that feeling is completely gone,"
"My current life feels so right, I can't go back to the way it was before,"
he thought.
"Before, my days were spent searching for food and defending my territory, but now everything feels comfortable," Haku chirped cheerfully. "I feel like I can find something else to enjoy."
